Scarborough 2007
So if everyone is sitting
comfortably…? I’ll proceed then with the story of Scarborough Rally
2007. Now that we’ve just about thawed out after Morecambe, then having
the success of the egg run, Scarborough came upon us pretty swift.
Friday mornings meet was scheduled for Hillend at 10am and I must admit
I was pleasantly surprised to see everyone who was going assembled there
on time. Must be a good omen for the rest of the journey eh?…………naw.
First-off Tam had gotten a
puncture before the meet, then Paul got one at the garage itself (like
faither like son eh!). Place your bets on the airline being out of
order… yip, you guessed right! Paul sorted it though eventually – took a
wee while as his tools looked like they came out a Christmas cracker!
Job done and we were off to get Callum in Dalkeith. Things then went ok
although the group quickly split with the 50mph+ gang up front and then
Callum and Tam about 10 miles behind!! (Swore I saw a wheelchair going
past Callum at one point!). On the other hand my lammy was zipping along
like a sweet thing…..for a while. Just past Jedburgh it all went Pete
Tong giving it crunchy noises and gr inding
to a halt. Fuck. Brand new engine as well just run-in at Morecambe. Just
as was thinking of the long wait for the AA, Pete says ‘christ, it would
probably fit in the back of that thing’, pointing at Julie’s 7-seater.
Funny man eh, then it’s like ‘no, actually – it just might!?’ Five pairs
of hands lifting up a dead lammy, turning it on its side to feed it in
then back upright again in the car and we are off my friends!!! Would’ve
had a photo of it going in sooner but seems my lammy also vibrated my
digital camera to death as well. Ah well, can’t complain – plushest
back-up van I’v e ever been in! Nice one Julie – you’re a star.
So off we go again, same
deal as before with the car at the back. After a bit Julie wanted to
just crack on, so we were about to make a move and pass the scoots when
all of a sudden Tam seizes and starts getting a massive swerve on. He
tries to hold it, then flies over the handlebars and goes tumbling down
the A68 in a nasty looking spill. After making sure he is ok, the damage
is inspected and looks not bad. Dented bodywork and burst lights but it
runs and seems to drive ok. After I gave it a wee road test, Tam bravely
jumped back on and nursed it the last 130 miles to the campsite in
Scabby. (and home again) Well done that man! The rest of the journey was
fairly uneventful other than another heat seize (from Paul this time)
and Jeannies throttle sticking on at full!!, then all the scoots
eventually rolled in. Of course I was already in the bar (cheers
Julie!), after roping in Gordy to help lift out lammy (well I didn’t
know he’d just had a heart scare and was off for a lie-down!). Met up
with Kitch and Tony etc, at our digs then it was drinking time round the
bars and off to the ‘do’. As usual it’s memory loss time here (someone
else will have to start doing the backshift reviews!) but it was a great
night, with a small blip at the pizza shop where abuse was had for late
production of potato wedges!

Saturday started early for
some (Big Steve in casino bar until 7am) and late for others (back to
kip after brekkie) but was a gorgeous day which me and jeannie spent
down the beach lazing about watching all the scoots and bikes going
past. A phone call from Kitch saying Shed magazine want pics and feature
for Jeannies scoot (nice one!) brought us back to digs then after a
carry-out and a delivery (???) in front of the digs it was back off
round the bars. Saturday was meant to be a quiet night for driving home
(but I wisnae) so a bender was had. I can’t remember much but I remember
bits – tequila rose, fag burn on ma fleece, comatose guy getting bins
emptied on him, jeannie stealing a taxi from the back of the queue,
thinking I had lost my money, realising I’d spent it at the bar! The
lapdancers in my room (maybe that was a dream?!) Ah well.
Sunday morning I called
the AA before breakfast to get a headstart then was amazed when they
turned up when I was just buttering ma toast! Better than the service
back home eh Jacko – haha. Kitch was busy changing his clutch pressure
plate on the kerb outside and the breakdown guy obviously thought that
was the patient but was steered in the right direction (ev en
though he thought I was ‘at it’ at first and just wanted a lift – cheeky
barsteward!) ‘you try and kickstart it then’. Soon after I was on me way
and heard everyone else had set off ok. I was back in my garage for
about half three and the AA guy even spent half an hour helping strip
down my chaincase on his break! I started getting ‘three rings’ soon
after with everyone getting home ok without ‘much’ drama (that sticky
throttle again eh Jeannie!), although with the geographical skills in
this club I’m surprised we all got back the same day!! Overall I reckon
it was a good time had by most, and a special mention must go to both
Tam and Callum. Not only was it the first National for both, it was also
done on lower capacity scoots and especially for Tam must have been an
epic. Hope your bumps and bruises are better soon, well in time for the
next one anyway! P.s. Callum - the sooner you get that malossi kit
fitted the better! Haha. I’ll sort something soon.
Next up is the 2000 mile
round trip to Elba. Unfortunately I will not be there although Davie and
Lynne are going on the scoot and I’m sure Squire and Mary will help out
with a review and write-up. Me – Jealous? F-----g Right!!!! On the
domestic front we have Groundhogs next month then Kelso just after. See
yous all there!
