Bridlington 2006

Bridlington kind of represents the end of the rally season for me so for that reason it’s a mixed emotion rally. Traditionally the weather for the journey is shit, usually really windy and over the years has been really hard work on the scoots. I still remember the year (2002?) I went on the bike and a caravan blew off the road in front of me!!, and the year after when Jeannie got so cold she fell off her scoot at a standstill and couldn’t breathe properly. Bit of hypothermia! (just an excuse to drink brandy!) Anyway, as a result and due to the fact both scoots needed hip replacements after this years efforts, for the second year running we found ourselves on our concession car rally and heading down the A1 towards East Yorkshire. After a quick bite in the increasingly popular posh digs, we headed across to the Southcliffe to see if the carpet could possibly be any stickier this year! Actually, come to think of it, that’s all we did the whole weekend – camped days in the Southcliffe and slept nights across the road!?! Met up with a good turnout from Edinburgh supplemented with an excellent turnout from the various English branches and also Sweden including old friends Jonathan, Rolf and Ante, who even had clothes on some of the time!

At this point a well-deserved mention must go out to Davie Russell. Can you believe the guy? After all my feeble excuses in the first paragraph, not only did Davie take his T5 to Brid, he also picked up his girl on the way. Good effort? Consider then she only lives in bloody Telford!!!! 470 mile journey each way by the quickest route so I dare say it worked out more. Well done son! (p.s was it worth it, wink-wink!) Highlights of the weekend for me included an unmissable karaoke session with Willie Grieve outstanding performance. Hilarious – check the video on the site. And a superb rendition of ‘My Way’ by a pogo-ing John Boy Walton, recently released back into circulation after an unplanned extended holiday. Nice to see you mate. Quick mention also to Shrek and the rest the Worksop Lions, who we had a blether with. ‘My Mam’s a midget lesbian eh!’ You had to be there. They rescued Jeannie last year when she seized her scoot in Holland. Nice one. Was temped to eat in the Southcliffe on Saturday when I saw the plateful Davy and Dude got for only a few pound but the 50% fat on Dudes gammon changed my mind! Turned out to be the best decision I made all weekend as me and Jeannie ended up having a superb dinner in the posh digs with Norman and Isabel. Thanks you pair and congratulations on the engagement. Back at the Ranch (oops – wrong rally), the beers were really starting to do some damage and it got a bit messy!  I had Ante asking me every 5 mins how cold the sea would be? ‘I vont to go svimming’!!! haha - Life and Soul mate, it would’ve been a duller rally without you, although Jeannie says she prefers it when you don’t wipe your armpits on her. Can’t think why?! Then Mark, who endured a bollocking from Fiona for one reason or another, without altering the cheesy smile on his coupon the whole time! Look up ‘Happy Drunk’ in the dictionary and there’ll be a picture of Mark. There’s one half way through the rally pics so you’ll see what I mean. The back bar was busy as ever with good sterling DJ work from Tony, Jimbo and Kitch. I remember at one point trying to go back through though and couldn’t work out why the door was stuck. Seems it was 3am and it’d been shut and locked for an hour! Really? Told you it was messy. Then it moved up a gear on the Saturday when somebody fed funny aspirins to the Swedes! Hilarious. I’ve never seen anyone’s eyes bounce about the inside of their skull like Rolf’s were! Plus he was the designated driver for the next day! I think he paid one of the others to take the shift though – about £60! Oh, by the way – Jeannie is still not for sale but thanks for asking! Eventually the front bar shut as well around 4am I think, but Mary’s Handbag bar opened at around the same time and although it didn’t stock a wide variety of drinks neat Morgans will do just fine thanks! A few attempts by the bar staff to get everyone out just resulted in a sit-down on the floor protest, which is as effective as handcuffs with that sticky cheesy carpet. Eventually they gave up and sat down for a blether as well until the fire alarm going off just before 5am ended the nights proceedings and effectively the 2006 rally season as well. It was a series of messy good-byes to the Swedes and all other friends and acquaintances due to the state of everyone but I can assure you all that a great time was had and it was real nice to meet again.

This year has been a blast….roll on 2007!
