Animals fae Naboombu 2007

Once again the scooter club with the weirdest name in Britain (unless you’re familiar with bedknobs and broomsticks) put on a rally for all us fortunate folks on the lovely wee Island of Bute, West Scotland. I’ve been there a few times before but not for the rally so this was a first for me and I was really looking forward to it. Thursday night and with one eye on the weather forecast was still to choose to take the ‘normal’ lammy or the insane one. Dunno why I bothered checkin’ – of course it was forecast fuckin rain!!! Has rained every other rally this year except the one I broke down at (Scarborough), so normal lammy it was then, as the other one really wants to spin round in circles when its wet. So it was only Jeannie and me that set off on the Friday. Martyn n Sam were due to come up from Goole but couldn’t make it due to work. Shame – miss you guys. We decided to go the long route round as couldn’t face the drudgery of the M8 so worked our way around Stirling and across to Loch Lomond before going down through Argyll to Bute. Journey was fine apart from some torrential rain and Jeannie snapping a hugger bracket (again). We just missed the ferry but seeing as it only goes about ½ mile then comes back again its no big deal eh! On the Island and we paid our dues, picked up our welcome packs (nice touch), said hello to Paul and Vicky and nipped into the campsite and flung tent up quickstyle.

Had a wee word at this point as there was a rumour going about that someone from the blues had been saying the rally was cancelled. Can’t say I had heard anything (well we’d turned up eh!) but still a bit disappointing if it’s true. If it’s not true then still a bit disappointing that we’re getting the blame but no more info has been forthcoming so it has been agreed to forget about it and put it to bed. ‘nuff said.  Anyway, shot off to Haddows for the dearest carry-oot in history and was boakin’ when I got back and realised the drink on site was cheaper! Mind you they didnae have guinness so not so bad. Had a wee wander around the marquee and ‘function suite’ and was impressed that the Animals had made the best of what they had there. Nice one. Billy Hardie arrived with the biggest seat cushion I’ve seen in my life (think he’s patented it as a ‘comfort’ fitting!) Nice to see most people had made the effort to arrive on scoots and if not then the cars were kept off the campsite. Well done. Seems a few folk had a wee bit drama getting to this rally. Neil from Gorehounds and Wee Bob from Dalgety Bay both had blow-outs on way through and although Bob stayed upright, Neil wasn’t so fortunate and gave himself and the scoot a sore one in the process. (cracked elbow – cracked frame). Goldie, Andy and Red also came all the way up from daaarrrnn South (Gainsborough Bed and Breakfast SC) with Red shearing the rear hub on his custom lammy. Did well to stay upright as well by all accounts.

Got talkin to big Stevie from the Beer Pigs and went on a pub-crawl down the street. Only went to one pub mind you, but after making the SERIOUS mistake of working our way along the malt shelf, we definitely got the ‘crawl’ bit right!!! We left the pub pretty hammered which resulted in drink- induced memory loss so it is pleasing to see Niffy had the courtesy to film it to remind us, producing an unmissable video clip of a totally steamin’ Jeannie pole-dancin in the marquee! (click here) This was followed by an unplanned collapse leading to bruising of the upper face and subsequently followed by me draggin her back to the tent for lights oot! Pish-heed. Saturday morning was sore. Got rudely awakened by Pete with a ‘technical enquiry’ as Squire’s carb slide had stuck and they were still 50-odd miles from Bute. Three more calls and one hour later it was still no’ right so they waited on the AA while Pete came down himself. Soon more of the club arrived courtesy of Sumo’s new toy and we ended up with a small but respectable turnout. The showers faded away and ended up a no’ bad day. I was asked to vote in custom show and although there were loadsa nice scoots including some really trick paintjobs there was one I felt was head and shoulders above the rest. A stunning wee cutdown called ‘Pure Evil’. Ticked all the boxes for me and duly picked up the choice trophies.

The days entertainment continued with the Animal waterslide. Words will not do this justice so best to click on the youtube link and see BJ on it for yourself. (click here) Hilarious. Pity I missed filming Fiona stepping up and flinging hersel’ down the slide fully clothed!  We then headed down town with Billy and Sharon from Culloden (big thanks to the three Animals who not only let us share the taxi but also squared the bill upfront. Cheers.) and went for a wee Italian I’d booked earlier. As usual we ate and drank far too much so by the time we got to the Pavillion it took about an hour to drink the first pint! Tell you what though, crackin’ venue for a rally do and the place really started coming alive when the band came on. They were really good and we were a wee bit disappointed to hear it was their last gig as we’d thought about maybe hiring them for our own do. The interval catered for the raffle which for once I was a wee bit jealous about as the prizes looked much better than the normal array and then time for a wee poem from BJ, live for one night only at the Pavilion!! I’m sure there was a wee tear in his eye when he was milking the applause though!  The rest of the night was dedicated to getting in an awfy state which was especially achieved by Squire, Mary, Mark and Fiona. See the photos and try and argue then eh!, followed by various blethers with Alex and Karen, ‘Lambretta Art’ Mark, Ian and Nikki from Coyotes, Skolar, Niffy, Haily and wee Paddy amongst others before eventually getting taxis back to the site. Just when I was thinking about crawling into the scratcher I could hear Neil from Tullibody shouting about someone had stolen his mudguard, but eventually went back out to show the assembled crowd a photo of the scoot arriving without it on. Crazy fool! To make up for it I made him a new one in the morning – full custom with Strongbow graphics!! Although it was made outta cardboard I reckoned it was tops! Ungrateful gits! (Hope your arm’s feeling better mate).

Sunday morning we were stuck on the Island until ten at least as that’s when the only petrol station opened so after trying to wake Squire and Mary a few times we headed off to refuel. Came back and still no life so we did what we had to – stuck back of my lammy into tent, stuck front brake on, full throttle and dumped clutch! Full minute of burn-out and exhaust reek and they didnae even move an inch! Lazy bastards!  So it was only me, Jeannie and Pete that set off for the wee ferry and the scenic route home. Had a look at Squires T5 back on the mainland and instantly noticed that all that was wrong with the slide was the throttle cable wisnae in the adjuster properly. Fannies! Took about 1 second to fix. Mind you – still couldnae get it started although it was flooded and squire had locked the air filter in the toolbox. (Got a text later from Mary to say they hadn’t left until 4 and the scoot had started and ran fine) We had a braw wee run home until I nipped up so upjetted when we stopped and was superb after that…….well for a while until it seized again!! Ended up limping home at half pace so thanks to Pete and Jeannie for sticking with ma scoot.  So then, it remains to thank the Animals for a blindin’ rally and I’m sure I speak for all the club that were there, when I say it was a crackin weekend. Nice one.
